There will most certainly come a time in every writer’s career where they will hit the wall. Writer’s block is something that happens to even the best of writers, and they all know that if you step back and implement a few techniques you can overcome it easily.
The answer to how to overcome the writer’s block is different for every writer, but if you try one of these tips you could break free and get those creative juices flowing once again.
Here are 5 proven techniques that have powerful results when it comes to overcoming writer’s block:
Find Creative Distractions
While distractions can be a cause of a writer having difficulty doing their work, taking a break by doing something creative can have amazing results. Writing poetry, painting, drawing, putting together a scrapbook, and building in your garage, are all creative ways to get your mind back on track.
Working on a creative project, you do not feel that overwhelming stress hanging over your head, suddenly those creative juices start flowing again. When the writing urge hits, put down your creative project and get back to writing.
These little distractions exercise that creative section of your brain, and it only takes the right nudge to get things back on track.
Getting Up Early
Studies have shown that when your brain is in the theta mode, it is at its most creative.
This pattern happens when you are in a dead sleep, unfortunately. If you are currently stalled out and can not get that writing moving along, try waking up at 5:00 am and get right to work.
When you drag yourself to the computer, your brain is still in that creative mode at this early hour. While the brain still thinks it is in a dream pattern, you will be surprised with all the creative ideas that you come up with.
The best thing about this technique is that at 5:00 am you have zero distractions around you too. This is usually the quietest time of day, and a great opportunity to get writing with full focus.
Learn Speed Writing
Find fifteen minutes where you can be alone with your thoughts, and turn off the phone, television, and cancel all appointments. This is going to be sort of like a brainstorming session on overdrive.
For those fifteen minutes, you are going to type as many ideas as fast as you can without stopping. You can forget about punctuation, grammar, and about making clear or concise sentences.
The key here is to get the brain to spit out as many ideas as it can in fifteen minutes without giving it the chance to second guess. By the end of the week, you will have pages of unique ideas that could be exactly what you need to get past the block and back to writing again.
A Real Appointment
Take time to treat your time writing as if you were meeting with a very important client. In a way you will be, the client is you and without you, this writing is not going to work.
During your meeting today, turn off all phones, tell family and friends you can not be reached, clean up your workspace, eliminate all other potential distractions, and sit down comfortably at your computer and start writing.
When your area is organized, your distractions are limited, and you put all your focus on your writing, you take it more serious and the writing happens much more easily.
Get Up And Move
Many times the reasons for a writer’s block is because you have been sitting in that same chair, in that same position, and staring at that same page for days.
Take time to get up and move that body. The thing about yoga, cycling, jogging, or even walking, is that it gets your body into a flow state. The end result is when the body flows, the mind follows.
When you can relax your mind, the imagination that you need to write finds its way back into your body. Once you get your body moving, you have the ability to focus on certain ideas for a longer period.
By applying even one of these techniques, you slowly train the body and brain to learn how to overcome writer’s block.
Writer’s block happens to even the best writer’s in the world, and the reason why they are the best is that they always find a way to get past it.
The techniques mentioned above will surely help you too to get back to doing what you love doing.
